Grand Final Winners

Three Woolgoolga teams lifted Premiers trophies on North Coast Football’s Grand Final weekend. Here is how it happened;

3rd division men
The only senior Woolgoolga team to win a Grand Final this year was the 3rd division men’s Dolphins who defeated Orara 3-2 in extra time. And the winning goal game less than a minute before the teams were due to decide the match on a penalty shootout. Quite an achievement for a bunch of mates who don’t train! Their opposition certainly do train and were therefore fitter and in most cases younger. Orara went ahead 1-nil early and led 2-1 at half time but the Dolphins equalised before full time, putting the match into extra time. The game was played at Rushforth Park and by the time the winner was scored, it was nearly 10.30pm. From what we gather, it’s just as well the team hired a bus for the trip because very few of them would have been fit to drive home.

12 girls Sharks

The only Woolgoolga girls team to win a Grand Final was the 12 Sharks in division 2. In fact a Woolgoolga team was always going to win this one because the other team was the Woolgoolga Pippies made up of mostly 10 year olds who were forced to play up an age level but who managed so well they became minor premiers. It was nil-all at half time in a typically tight contest between these two friendly rivals, but the Sharks scored three second half goals to take the match convincingly. Brodie Frew scored twice, then captain Christine Rogers scored the third. Many of the girls playing in this game went to the Football NSW training weekend earlier this year where they got to meet with and get a few tips from the Matildas. I’m sure the Matildas would be proud of how both Woopi teams played on this day.

10 boys Sharks

The only Woolgoolga boys team to win a Grand Final was the 10 years Sharks in division 3 and they did it in style against arch enemies Northern Storm. Storm won several Grand Finals against Woopi on this day, but here was the lone victory against our southern rivals. The Sharks moved the ball quickly from the opening whistle and began scoring goals early but kept their own goalkeeper quiet. Goals to Sam C., Sam S. and two goals to Ash W. made the final score 4-nil.
